What is Ultrasound Therapy?
This non-invasive treatment option has been used since the 1940s and is all done in an outpatient setting. There are two basic types of therapeutic ultrasound therapy and they work well for chronic pain conditions.
What are the Two Types of Ultrasound Therapies?
The two types of therapeutic ultrasound are thermal and mechanical. Thermal is a deep heat that increases circulation and should decrease the pain in the area and promote healing. Mechanical is a cavitation therapy that quickly expands and contracts gas bubbles that will surround the injury and speed healing to that afflicted area.
Benefits of Ultrasound Therapy
There are several benefits to receiving ultrasound therapy, such as:
• Encouraging healing through deep tissue warming
• Increasing flexibility in the muscles
• Decreasing pain
• Lowering swelling and inflammation
• Improving circulation and blood flow to the area
• It’s a simple and non-invasive procedure that is normally pain-free
Conditions Commonly Treated by Ultrasound Therapy
With the reduction of inflammation and swelling, along with the circulation restoration and tissue healing, ultrasound therapy is commonly used for treating:
- Frozen shoulder syndrome
- Sprains and strains
- Muscle and tendon tears
- Muscle spasms
