Interferential Current Therapy

Dr. Charles Findlay is a chiropractor who cares. At Findlay Chiropractic, serving Lincoln, NE, we provide much-needed holistic care, including Interferential Therapy, to the local community and surrounding areas.

What Is Interferential Therapy?

Interferential Therapy (IFT/IFC) is a form of electrotherapy used for physical benefits. This type of therapy uses two forms of electric current that ‘interfere’ with each other to produce effects similar to receiving low-frequency stimulation. The currents penetrate through the barrier of the skin to reach the soft tissues of the body and are likely to produce a tingling feeling on the skin that isn’t painful.

Interferential Therapy is widely used by chiropractors and physiotherapists as a targeted and non-invasive treatment to reduce pain by kickstarting the production of the body’s natural pain-relieving endorphins. Similarly, it’s used to stimulate healing, reduce swelling and inflammation, and alleviate muscle spasms, aches, and tension.

Benefits of Interferential Therapy

Dr. Findlay at Findlay Chiropractic serving Lincoln, NE, uses Interferential Therapy as a standalone treatment or as part of an integrative and holistic treatment protocol for his patients suffering from soft tissue injuries. It’s also a beneficial treatment for patients suffering from acute or chronic pain in different regions of the body, including painful symptoms from neuromuscular conditions like sciatica.

Another benefit of Interferential Therapy is that it can be used to treat or reduce the symptoms of inflammatory conditions like bursitis and osteoarthritis.

Under certain conditions including post-surgical recovery, IFT can be used for muscle weakness and stress incontinence.

What to Expect

Interferential Therapy offers enormous benefits to patients suffering from soft tissue injuries they may have picked up at work, in their car or home, or even on the sports field. If you have never been to an electrical stimulation therapy treatment like Interferential Therapy, please put your mind at ease. It is non-invasive and should not be painful beyond some tingling.

At this appointment, you can expect Dr. Findlay to apply some electroconductive gel to the affected region before affixing some electrode pads to the skin.  There are different settings on the machine providing the current and your therapist will adjust it according to your needs and comfort level. That part of the skin may feel warm, and you may notice the affected muscles contracting and releasing during the session.

Depending on the severity of your condition, an IFT appointment may last for between 5 and 20 minutes. Once the session is done, the pads will be removed, and the gel wiped away before you will be released from your appointment.
